Oberth Colonist Proto For Vinyl

This is a prototype for a vinyl release of my 'Oberth Colonist' figures.....the original series was designed to be one-off pieces made in a combination of Super Sculpey and Fimo with an average height of around 3.5". The vinyl version is a little different....there will be more detail to the figure and it'll also be bigger, around 5" - 6". Another addition to these will hopefully be a set of three interchangeable faces with maybe one of them being blank....Here's the WiP shots from the start of making this....

1st stage - getting the general shape right

This is after the first bake

And this is the addition of the bumps

....and next is much sanding.....and more sanding.......and more sanding.....then I'll add legs and feet and the face porthole.....there just might also be another little bonus accessory to be added to a very limited number of these.....

New Oberth Colonist

Here's another to add to the group....this one is not quite finished...needs a lil more sanding and a polish.....and he's a tad grumpy....

The Oberth Colonists *update*

So....here's another one prior to some final paint application to the face and the map....this is the fifth one I've completed but so far I'm only happy with three of them.....

.....As soon as I've finished up with the paint on the three I'm happy with I'll be announcing a competition to win a colonist....look out for it here or my Flickr or on Vinyl Toy Freaks.

The Oberth Colonists *update*

Soooo.....these guys are coming along slowly......here's a couple more I've started. The first one has now been polished a little and so has the second. The third one is still at the sanding stage. I have still to fully work out the map style I'll be using on the bodies and they all will be getting a little more work on the faces with a wash of paint.....

The Oberth Colonists

Here's some work-in-progress shots of the beginings of a little group of characters I'm working on called 'The Oberth Colonists'....

....The Oberth Colonists wander the universe in search of other colonists. Once all the colonists have gathered themselves they can then piece together the maps that have been scarred onto them at birth and begin their journey home. Unfortunately for them, they don't know how many colonists there were originally nor how many are still alive.

The name comes from Hermann Oberth, a German physicist who published his thesis By Rocket into Planetary Space in 1923, which triggered wide-scale interest and scientific research on the topic of space flight.

....this was a little experiment to see how well Super Sculpey and Fimo mixed and baked together as I wanted to produce some figures that would be self coloured without the need to paint them...I'll still probably end up doing some very minor painting on the faces though. There's a fair bit of work left to be done with this first one. I'm still undecided about putting arms on it and there's a lot of sanding and some polishing to do.....and his map needs to be applied. This one stands 3.5" tall.
